Why I Wanted to Become a Flight Attendant

When I was younger, I never knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. I decided to major in Nutriton and Dietetics in college because I love food and I’m passionate about nutrition. Plus my sister is a Dietitian! I am still super passionate about nutrition, but after shadowing my sister at work a few times I realized it wasn’t the job for me.

I’m not someone who thrives with a 9 to 5 job- I do better if everyday is different (I get bored way too easily). I crave change.

I decided I wanted to become a flight attendant the week before I started my senior year of college. I was on a flight from New York City back to Florida. I went to New York to visit my boyfriend who had just moved there and I was extremely sad to be leaving him. I remember on the flight I kept thinking about how nice it would be if I could just hop on a plane and visit him every weekend (we were long distance). Then it clicked in my brain “I want to become a flight attendant!”

I have no clue why I had never thought of it before. My cousin was a flight attendant, my uncle was an airline pilot, and my aunt also worked for a major airline- it was clearly in my blood to work in the airline industry!

Once I decided that’s what I wanted to do, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the ways this job would be perfect for me: Not a normal 9 to 5 job, odd hours, super flexible, going different places everyday, meeting tons of new people – I could never get bored!

Also I thought about how my friends and family are the most important thing to me and the fact that I have so many loved ones living all around the country. The perfect job for me would be one that enabled me to see them all! And let me tell you, that’s my favorite part of my job. My sister lives in Seattle, I’m able to get layovers there all the time and see her while I work! Same goes for my friends in Florida, California, Texas, etc! It’s incredible. Also, right now I’m going to a lot of weddings and bachelorette parties and you can’t beat the fact that my job is flexible enough for me to get time off to go to all of the events and that I get to fly wherever they are without worrying about anything except the standby list!

Another reason becoming a flight attendant was so appealing to me, is because a lot of my friends were able to study abroad in college and I wanted to so badly but didn’t have enough time or money to do so. I wanted to travel! And I can’t think of a job better for traveling.

I still finished my nutrition degree and graduated from college, but I spent my entire senior year researching how to become a flight attendant and preparing to apply and interview.

I love my job so much. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made. If you’re someone who wants a super flexible job with abnormal hours where you get to travel the world while working and meet hundreds of new people a day, then this is the perfect job for you! I know it is for me!
